Buckeye Ambitions Under Threat After Star Quarterback Sidelined

October 21, 2026 2 min read

The road to a national championship just became significantly steeper for Ohio State following devastating news regarding star quarterback Julian Sayin. Coach Ryan Day revealed on Tuesday that Sayin is out indefinitely due to an arm injury sustained during the narrow victory over Indiana last Saturday. While the timeline remains fluid, Day admitted the program is preparing for a worst case scenario where Sayin misses not only the rest of the regular season but potentially the postseason as well.

This vacancy at the most critical position on the field creates an immediate crisis for the number three ranked Buckeyes. With a high stakes clash against number sixteen USC looming on October 31, Day plans to use the upcoming bye week to evaluate backups Luke Fahey and Tavien St. Clair. Losing Sayin means losing one of the most productive arms in college football, as he entered this hiatus ranking third nationally in both passing yards and touchdowns.

Beyond the immediate tactical struggle, there is a growing concern regarding how the College Football Playoff selection committee will view a diminished roster. Although Ohio State currently sits comfortably in bracket projections, history suggests that missing a centerpiece player can lead to heavy penalties during seed evaluations. Many analysts pointed toward Florida State’s exclusion from the playoffs in 2023 after Jordan Travis went down as a cautionary tale of how a key injury can derail an undefeated team’s destiny.

Despite the void at quarterback, Ohio State still possesses elite weapons including Heisman candidate Jeremiah Smith and a suffocating defense that allows fewer than fourteen points per game. However, whether those strengths can compensate for the loss of Sayin’s leadership and efficiency remains to be seen. As they prepare for grueling matchups against Oregon and Michigan, the Buckeyes are no longer just fighting opponents on the field, but also trying to prove to voters that they remain championship material without their star signal caller.
