Musk Eyes Historic Powerhouse Merger Between Tesla and SpaceX

October 21, 2026 2 min read

Elon Musk has revealed that he is seriously weighing a potential merger between his two most prominent ventures, Tesla and SpaceX. Speaking during a call with financial analysts on Tuesday, Musk admitted that while a deal is far from guaranteed, he believes there is significant merit in combining the operations of the electric vehicle giant and the aerospace pioneer. To explore the feasibility of such a massive undertaking, special committees have already been established within both organizations to negotiate possible terms, though Musk cautioned that these groups have yet to reach an agreement.

The scale of such a union would be staggering, potentially creating one of the largest corporate entities in history given that Tesla is valued at approximately 1.5 trillion dollars and SpaceX sits at around 2 trillion. Musk acknowledged the immense complexity of the process, describing the navigation of legal and regulatory hurdles as akin to tap dancing through a minefield. Because he serves as the chief executive for both firms, Musk noted that he considers himself a conflicted party and has intentionally excluded himself from the committees overseeing the discussions.

For a merger to materialize, it would require a steep climb toward shareholder approval, specifically needing at least half of Tesla investors to sign off on the plan. Despite this high bar, Musk has historically enjoyed strong backing from his shareholders, who recently approved a massive compensation package for him. The drive toward integration follows several years of overlapping interests; just recently, the two companies launched Terafab to co-manufacture computer chips, signaling a strategic shift toward shared goals in artificial intelligence and software development.

While SpaceX continues to see explosive growth in its Starlink revenue and cloud computing services, it remains unprofitable overall, reporting losses of 1.1 billion dollars over the first nine months of the year. ThisFinancial volatility stands in contrast to its soaring valuation since going public in June. Market reaction to the news was immediate and positive, with SpaceX shares climbing eight percent in after hours trading and Tesla seeing a modest rise as investors anticipate how this consolidation might reshape the landscape of global technology.
